Information Theory is being applied in a variety of different disciplines including diverse areas of computer science and electrical engineering, statistics, physics, neurobiology, and mathematics. After a brief introduction to the topic, I will present a collage of ideas and applications of information theory. Shannon's laws of information play a central role in most applications of information theory. Around 15 years ago Zhang and Yeung discovered a new law of information theory, and in recent years a number of research groups have worked on this and by the help of computers discovered a whole new class of laws.
In the talk I will relate these discoveries to results we obtained on a recent EPSRC grant on Information flows and Information bottlenecks in Network Coding.
